Greg La Follette’s Journey

A Life in the Vines

Greg La Follette’s path to winemaking began not in a cellar, but in a lab. With a background in biochemistry and sensory science, Greg first applied his expertise in the medical and agricultural fields before a deep calling led him to the vineyards of Burgundy. There, he discovered that winemaking was equal parts science, instinct, and soul—a quiet conversation with nature.

Early 1990s

The Science of the Soil

Greg studied viticulture and enology at UC Davis, where his technical foundation was shaped by some of the industry's most respected scientists. He went on to pioneer research in the microbiology of fermentation, tannin structure, and vine physiology—tools he would later use not to control wine, but to listen to it.

Mid–Late 1990s

Sonoma Roots and Landmark Projects

Greg made his mark as head winemaker for some of California’s most acclaimed estates, including Flowers Vineyard & Winery, Hahn Estate, and Tandem Winery. He played a pivotal role in establishing Sonoma Coast as a world-class growing region for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, earning accolades for his ability to let terroir lead.

2000s

Low Intervention, High Integrity

Long before it was trending, Greg championed low-intervention winemaking and sustainable, biodiverse farming. His wines became known for their restraint, complexity, and quiet power—favoring native fermentations, low SO2, and extended aging on lees to amplify the grape’s natural voice.

2020–Present

The Marchelle Chapter

Greg co-founded Marchelle Wines with two couples who shared his reverence for old vines, sustainable farming, and wines that whisper instead of shout. As Marchelle’s founding winemaker and philosophical soul, Greg now channels decades of experience into crafting small-lot, heritage-driven wines that reflect the earth, the season, and the human hands that guide them.

Greg La Follette

CO-FOUNDER & HEAD WINEMAKER

Known throughout Sonoma as the Vine Whisperer, Greg La Follette brings decades of experience, scientific rigor, and soulful craftsmanship to every barrel of Marchelle Wines. A biochemist-turned-vintner and former seminarian, Greg was mentored by the legendary André Tchelistcheff and served as founding winemaker at Flowers Winery, where he helped usher the estate into cult status.

Greg’s philosophy is rooted in biodiverse farming, low-intervention methods, and a deep reverence for old vines. From Bechthold to Sonoma Coast, his work revitalizing heritage vineyards around the world has made him one of California’s most respected winemakers. As a founding partner of Marchelle, Greg continues to guide our wines with both intuition and intention—letting the land lead.

Evan Damiano

WINEMAKER

Evan Damiano brings a global perspective and a hands-on, collaborative spirit to the Marchelle cellar. Working closely with Greg, Evan plays a key role in shaping our small-lot wines—especially our signature blends—throughout every step of the process, from vineyard visits to barrel tastings.

A seasoned winemaker with over 14 years in the industry, Evan has worked harvests across Australia, Oregon, and California, and previously served as Enologist at Pride Mountain Vineyards. Today, he not only crafts wines with depth and balance, but also serves as a strategic bridge between Marchelle and our wholesale and hospitality partners.

Kevin Lee

CO-FOUNDER & MANAGING PARTNER

A lifelong wine lover and longtime admirer of Greg’s work—from Tandem to La Follette Wines—Kevin co-founded Marchelle in 2021 to help carry forward Greg’s legacy of expressive, terroir-driven winemaking. With a 25-year career as a tech marketing executive in Silicon Valley, Kevin brings strategic leadership and operational clarity to the Marchelle vision.

He and his wife, Michelle, are also hands-on vineyard stewards—owning and tending Harmony Lane Vineyard, a 3-acre Pinot Noir site nestled in the coastal hills near Occidental. Kevin’s passion lies in bridging storytelling, hospitality, and integrity across every glass.
